SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After two weeks off the trench, the University of Hawai'i women's cross country team overcame unexpected obstacles to finish 26
thoverall at the Capital Cross Challenge, Saturday morning at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
UH's strongest runners senior
Danielle Girard and sophomore
Sienna Santiago went through unforeseen complications to stifle their performances. Girard (heat related issues) finished third for the Rainbow Wahine and 189
th overall (24:32.8) while Santiago (back) finished 210
th(25:50.8).
"Not the results we were looking for today," said head coach
Tim Boyce. "Looking for us to bounce back strong at Kahuku next Saturday; we're better than these results indicate."
Having a career-performance in just her second 6k meet, freshman
Olivia Hill continued to progress as the season goes on, registering a new PR of 24:02.9, finishing first for the Rainbow Wahine and 159
thoverall.
Senior
Giovanna Casazza notched another team top-five performance, finishing second for UH, coming down the chute in a time of 24:28.2.
Rounding out the scoring five, freshman
Hope Stewart had a career-day, after competing in just two collegiate meets, recorded her highest team finish, coming across the line fourth for UH (24:49.5). Junior
Alison Bowman finished in scoring five for the third consecutive meet, finishing fifth for UH (24:52.1).
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine, freshman
Sierra Delaware finished 204
th(25:00.9) and freshman
A'ja-Faith Greene placed 213
th(25:07.4).
Hawai'i logged 725 points with an average time of 24:34.
The Rainbow Wahine will head back home to compete at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational on Saturday October 6, held at the Kahuku Golf Course.
