BRISBANE, Australia – In the first game of its Australian Tour, the University of Hawai'I Rainbow Warrior Basketball team fell to the NBL's Brisbane Bullets, 73-54, Saturday night at Sir John Pidgeon Sports Complex on the campus of Churchie Grammar School.
It was a low-scoring affair as the team's engaged in a physical and intense contest. UH, which was limited to 34 percent shooting, was led by newcomer
Eddie Stansberry who finished with 10 points. All three of Stansberry's field goals came from behind the arc. Another newcomer, freshman center
Dawson Carper, also impressed in his first live action with nine points, all coming in the second half.
The Bullets had a balanced attack with five players in double-digits, led by Jason Cadee and Tyrell Harrison with 12 points each.
It was a low-scoring, grind-it-out affair from the get-go before a standing-room only crowd of more than 1,000 fans. Brisbane clung to a 24-20 at the half as the teams combined for 24 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The 'Bows shot 27 percent in the first half with Brisbane not much better at 33 percent
Brisbane, however, went on a game-breaking 11-0 run to start the second half to take a 35-20 midway through the 3rd quarter. UH closed the quarter strong, cutting the deficit in half, and trailed just 49-42, heading into the final quarter.
The Bullets maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and pulled away late, in large part to their strength inside where they out-scored the Bows, 42-26. Brisbane also posted nine blocked shots and out-rebounded UH 45-34.
The Rainbow Warriors next travel to Melbourne and will face the Melbourne Tigers at the Veneto Club at 7:30 p.m.
