Melounova Falls In NCAA Singles First Round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—University of Hawai'i women's tennis sophomore No. 73 Petra Melounova took Texas Tech's 21st-ranked Gabriela Talaba to three sets before falling, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Singles Tennis Championships hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Wednesday afternoon.

It marked the second-straight season that Melounova has represented UH and the Big West in the NCAA Singles Championship. The two-time Big West Player of the Year had her eight-match win streak snapped and finishes the year with a 14-4 singles record.

The first set was on serve until Talaba, Texas Tech's senior who played No. 1 all season, broke Melounova to lead 4-2. Melounova, however, had three break point opportunities in the set at 2-2, 2-4, and 4-6 with .

In the second set, Talaba broke Melounova early to take a 3-1 lead, but Melounova broke right back to tie things at 3-3. She then broke Talaba to take a 5-3 lead and followed by holding her serve to win the second set, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1.

But in the third, Melounova was unable to gain traction against Talaba who rolled to a 6-0 third set win to capture the match in three. Talaba advances to the Round of 32 and will face the winner of the 15th-ranked Michaela Gordon (Stanford) vs. No. 72 Fatima Bizhukova (Wichita State) on Thursday.
