FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team's (25-20) bid for a series sweep fell short on Sunday at Bob Bennett Stadium, as Fresno State (28-23) held up the Rainbow Warrior offense after a pair of big-hitting wins, quelling a ninth-inning comeback.
Â
After knocking around 21 hits in the first two games of the series, both wins for UH, Fresno State finally found a way to quiet the Hawai'i bats, as Bulldog starter Nikoh Mitchell pitched a seven-inning shutout gem, limiting the 'Bows to just two hits.
Â
Down the stretch against reliever Ryan Jensen, Hawai'i finally got moving in the ninth as
Johnny Weeks delivered a one-out single and
Kekai Rios drew a walk. Third baseman
Ethan Lopez made the most of the opportunity, pushing an RBI single through the infield. After a walk by
Eric Ramirez, the 'Bows looked poised for their third rally in three games at Fresno State, but the go-ahead run finished the day on first as Jensen put away his final batter to secure the save and the 3-1 FS win.
Â
The 'Bows earned the 2-1 series win.
Â
After taking over in the third for starter
Cade Smith with a 2-0 deficit, junior left-hander
Kash Koltermann kept the 'Bows in contention, pitching a career-high 5.0 innings with just one run on six hits, striking out a career-best six batters.
Â
With the non-conference slate wrapped up, the Rainbow Warriors turn their focus back to the Big West and next week's Senior Weekend matchup with Long Beach State at Les Murakami Stadium, May 18-20.
