First-year assistant wide receivers coach
Andre Allen joined the University of Hawai'i football staff in mid-January. With 10 junior college national championships to his credit, Allen comes to Manoa after 27 years working the high-power passing offense at City College of San Francisco - the program that produced head coach
Nick Rolovich in his playing days, prior to his run at UH.
HawaiiAthletics.com and H-TV was able to sit down with the new receivers coach to gain some insight into the man behind the position.
Q: Who would you say is your coaching mentor?
A: My Coaching mentor is Daniel Hayes. Dan coached me as a player at City College of San Francisco and I was blessed to have the opportunity to coach 26 years with him. In the 26 years, Dan was a pivotal part in my development as a coach. He was encouraging and supportive of my ability to coach and knowledge of the game.
Q: The best part of living in Hawai'i so far?
A: The weather and how surprisingly nice the local people are.
Q: Do you have any superstitions?
A: No superstitions or pregame habits, or rituals. I have always believed as a coach that if the staff and I did our job preparing for our opponent along with preparing the team, I never felt a need for luck, superstitions or pregame rituals to ease my nerves going in to game day.
Q:As the Wide Receivers coach, what kind of excitement do you have for working in this offense?
A: Being a part of an offense that passes the ball as much as the Run & Shoot is exciting in itself being the wide receivers coach. It is a lot of pressure to coach and develop my position being that it is a huge part of making this offense click.
Q: Where's the best place to get your favorite food?
A: Ribs & brisket at Dixie Grill is the best Southern Style BBQ I've had on the Island so far.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: In my free time away from my football duties are spent with my family, BBQ's at the park or a day at the movies.
Q: Something that people would be surprised to know about you?
A: Probably, that If I am not coaching a football game, I would rather be at home watching it on television. It is hard for me to sit in the stands and watch an entire game. I get restless and lose interest just sitting there, but at home it's much more enjoyable.
