NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (15-7, 11-2 Big West) swept CSUN (7-18, 3-10 Big West) to open its final roadtrip of the season, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20. Senior
McKenna Granato recorded a match-high 12 kills while
Natasha Burns added 10 kills and a match-high six blocks at The Matadome on Friday night.
Granato, who is closing in on becoming just the 20
th Rainbow Wahine to join its 1,000 career kill club, needs just five more kills to accomplish the feat. Against CSUN, Granato hit a .500 hitting percentage on the night with just one error on 22 attacks. She also contributed with seven digs.
Burns notched her sixth double-digit kill match of the season and second in its last three matches. She hit at a .471 clip with just two errors on 17 swings. She led all players with six blocks as well as a match-high 13.5 points.
Senior Tita Akiu tallied her 21
st double-digit dig match of the season with a match-high 12 digs. She also dished out a pair of assists, while
Faith Ma'afala and
Norene Iosia had 18 and 17 assists respectively.
UH never trailed in the first set, and slowly pulled away to take a 1-0 lead. Hawai'i was aided by a 5-to-0 run—with four points coming off the serve of
Rika Okino—in the middle of the set for an 18-13 lead. Hawai'i continued to hold a five-point advantage over the Matdors at 23-18. CSUN however, rallied to finish the set on a 5-to-2 run to make things close, but Iosia split the block to put down a kill as UH took the first set, 25-23.
In Set 2, UH jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Matadors battled right back to tie it up at 5-5. The set would be tied three more times, the last coming at 8-8. UH then picked up three-straight points on
Janelle Gong's serve to take an 11-8 lead. The 'Bows led by as many as six points late and ended the frame at 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw CSUN take an early lead at 7-4, but the 'Bows score three straight to knot it up at 7-7. The Matadors then went back in front to lead 11-8. But the momentum pendulum swung the other way as UH went on a 6-to-0 run to tie and take the lead behind the serving of Gong. Hawai'i never relinquished the lead the rest of the way as they completed the sweep with a 25-20 win in Set 3.
The Matdors were led by Nicole Nevarez's 10 kills. Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker led CSUN with 16 assists while Kristey Markle had a team-high seven digs and Brianna Johnson had a team-high three blocks.
Hawai'i has a quick turnaround as it plays at Long Beach State on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid at 4:00 p.m. HT.
