NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (14-7, 10-2 Big West) embarks on its final and longest roadtrip of the season this week as they head to CSUN (6-17, 2-9 BWC) on Friday, Nov. 2 followed by a match at Long Beach State (13-12, 5-7 BWC) on Saturday, Nov. 3. Hawai'i will then head to Malibu to take on Pepperdine (15-7, 9-3 West Coast Conf). All three matches are slated to start at 4:00 p.m. HT.
This past weekend was a tale of two extremely different matches. Hawai'i came out firing to defeat No. 11 Cal Poly in five sets, 15-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10. It was the program's first victory over a Top 25 ranked opponent since 2015. But the following night, in the first set, UC Santa Barbara staved six UH set-points to steal Set 1, 28-26. From that point, the Gauchos rolled to a sweep over the 'Bows, 28-26, 25-22, 25-21. It was UH's first home conference sweep loss since 2008 to New Mexico State when UH was still a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
McKenna Granato continues to lead UH with 252 total kills while averaging 3.27 kills/set. She also leads UH with 33 service aces and is third on the team with 192 digs. She leads the 'Bows with 298.0 points. Granato is now just 17 kills away from becoming UH's 20
th member of the 1,000 career kill club.
Norene Iosia is the lynchpin to Hawai'i's success. Iosia, the converted setter/outside hitter, is second on the team in almost every category. She is second in kills (167); kills p/set (2.14); assists (371); digs (235); blocks (39); service aces (20) and points (206.5). Iosia is ranked No. 2 in the nation with four triple-doubles and she has recorded 12 double-doubles as well this season.
Libero Tita Akiu has been a digging machine for Hawai'i since transferring from Texas Tech for her senior campaign. She has recorded 20 double-digit dig matches out of UH's 21 matches played—including the last eight-straight matches.
Hawai'i's modified 6-2 offense with
Faith Ma'afala and Iosia at the controls continues to lead the league, averaging 13.03 assists p/set and 37.2 attacks/set. UH is ranked second in the league 13.72 kills/set. Individually, both of UH's middles,
Sarah Liva and
Natasha Burns are ranked No. 3 and 4 in hitting percentage. Burns is also ranked No. 3 in the Big West in blocks/set (1.08). Granato is No. 2 in the BWC with 0.43 service aces/set.
