HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team hosted the first day of their Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.

Saturday was the first time in UH's seven competition dates that the Rainbow Wahine were held out of the win column in doubles. Hawai'i battled hard, but in three of four matches the 'Bows lost by a break. UH's Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova fell to Utah's Jena Chen and Alexia Perovic, 7-5. Florida State's Andrea Garcia and Julia Mikulski held off UH's Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma, 6-4 and Utah's Whitney Turley and Leah Heimuli hung on for a 6-4 win over Hawai'i's Klara Pribylova and Nikola Dolakova.

In singles Taylor Lau and Houbova notched wins for the 'Bows. Lau edged out Florida State's Gabrielle Goldin 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. Houbova nearly blanked Utah's Jasmine Rich, 6-1, 6-1. UH's Michelle Pits dropped her first singles match of the season in a hard fought battle with FSU's Julia Mikulski, 6-7(5), 7-6 (4), 11-9 to drop Pits' record to 5-1. UH's Dolakova fought hard but came up just short against Utah's Jena Cheng who opened the tourney with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 12-10 win.

The Rainbow Wahine Invitational continues and concludes on Sunday, Jan. 14 with the first serve slated at 10:30 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
