Michelle Pits at Weinman Foundation Invitational

Women's Tennis

Women's Tennis Falls To Washington, 5-2

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team got off to a strong start, winning the double point, but couldn't maintain the momentum into the singles as Washington defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. In the loss however, UH's Michelle Pits kept her win streak alive, improving to 5-0 in the new year. It marked the first dual match of the season for UH and the first action on the courts for UW.

In doubles, UH's No. 3 duo of Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova nearly blanked UW's Stacey Fung and Alexis Prokopuik, 6-1. The Huskies' No. 1 team of Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong evened things by defeating Nikola Dolakova and Klara Pribylova, 6-2. The loss snapped Dolakova and Pribylova's win streak to drop their record to 5-1. Hawai'i's No. 2 pair of Roxanne Resma and Petra Melounova then came through to clinch the point with a 6-3 win over Kenadi Hance and Lana Slavica.

In singles, the lone UH winner was Pits who won in straight sets on the No. 6 court against Katarina Kopcalic, 6-2, 6-4. There were several close matches up and down the line up for the 'Bows. Both No. 1 Melounova and No. 5 Resma battled their opponents in the first set. But, Melounova fell to Fung, 7-5. 6-3 and Resma was edged out in a first set tiebreaker before dropping the second set, 7-6(4), 6-2. No. 5 Klara Pribylova won the first set via tiebreaker but lost the final two sets, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1.

Hawai'i continues its busy non-conference schedule as they host the Rainbow Wahine Invitational tournament this weekend. Both Florida State and Utah are in Honolulu for the two-day tourney which runs from Saturday, Jan.13-Sunday, Jan. 14. First serve on Saturday is slated for 11:00 a.m. with Sunday's matches starting at 10:30 a.m.
