POCATELLO, Idaho – It took more than 76 minutes, but the Hawai'i women's soccer team ended its four-game scoreless streak en route to a 2-0 win at Idaho State on Tuesday.
Sonest Furtado broke a scoreless tie in the 77th minute when she redirected a cross from
Dani Crawford and beat ISU goalkeeper Shawna Hennings. It was Furtado's second goal of the season, and first game-winner.
The shot was also Hawai'i's first shot on goal of the contest, but the Rainbow Wahine (3-4) kept the pressure on throughout the final 13 minutes. The 'Bows finished with 21 shots and six on goal.
Mikaelah Johnson-Griggs iced the game with when she scored her first career goal beating Hennings in the upper right corner in the 88th minute. Furtado assisted on the insurance goal.
Alexis Mata recorded her first career shutout in the victory, needing eight saves to maintain the clean sheet. UH had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and 21-20 edge in total shots in the game. Hennings made four saves for Idaho State (1-5).
Raisa Strom-Okimoto had five shots in the game, while Furtado had four, and
Sarah Lau and
Kellsie Gleason each had three.
The win snaps a four game losing streak for UH, which has some time to rest before returning to action at Arizona State on Sept. 15. Furtado's goal gave the Rainbow Wahine their first lead of the season, as the 'Bows came from behind and won in overtime in each of their first two victories.
