SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Two member of the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team competed on the opening day of the Battle of the Bay Classic in San Francisco, Calif. on Friday afternoon.
Blaz Seric and
Lucas Labrunie battled both in singles and doubles on the opening day at the California Tennis Club.
The two freshmen from UH competed in the doubles draw to start their day taking on Mathieau Garcia of Portland and Maxwell Mendelsohn of Pepperdine in the round of 16. Seric and Labrunie won their opening match, 8-5. But the Rainbow Warrior duo fell in the quarterfinals against second-seeded Alastair Gray and Alexander Rybakov of TCU, 8-5.
In the singles draw, Seric fell in straight sets to USC's Laurens Verbroven in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-4. Later in the day, Labrunie challenged UC Santa Barbara's Anders Holm, but came up short, 6-0, 6-2.
The two will compete in the consolation round starting on Saturday with Seric taking on Tadiwa Chinamo of Pacific at 10:30 a.m. (PT). Labrunie will have a bye to start the consolation bracket. He will face the winner of the Reese Stalder (TCU) vs. Oliver Poysti (USF) match at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
