INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The fifth-seeded University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to the No. 4 seed UC Irvine, 4-0 in the first round of the Big West Championship tournament. The Rainbow Warriors finish their season with a 2-15 overall record while the Anteaters improved to 9-14 on Thursday morning at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
UC Irvine earned the doubles point winning on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. UCI's No. 1 duo of Luis Lopez and Sebastian Heim defeated
Felix Albert and
Marcel Chan, 6-3. The Anteaters' No. 3 team of Vatsal Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing then held off UH's
Spencer Travalino and
Fabian Woehrl by a break, 6-4. The No. 2 match between Hawai'i's
Igor Kolaric and
Ruben Blattner and UC Irvine's Luca Marquard and Mason Hansen was tied at 5-5 when the No. 3 match concluded.
In singles, the Anteaters won the first three matches to clinch the match with wins on the No. 1, 3 and 6 courts. Heim defeated
Felix Albert, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 followed by Lopez who knocked off Woehrl, 6-2, 6-2. UC Irvine then sealed the sweep with Bajpai holding off
Eric Kenneth at No. 6, 7-5, 6-1.
It marked the final match for Hawai'i seniors
Marcel Chan and
Spencer Travalino.
