INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team enters the 2017 Big West Tournament as the top seed after running the table to an undefeated record in conference en route to capturing the program's first ever Big West regular season title. The Rainbow Wahine completed its run through the Big West, defeating Cal State Fullerton this past Sunday to finish 8-0 in conference play and clinch the outright women's regular season championship. It was the program's first Big West title since rejoining the league in 2013 following a stint in the PCAA/Big West from 1985-96.
UH is also the No. 1 seed at the Big West Tournament for the first time. The Rainbow Wahine will open the tourney in Friday's quarterfinals at 6:00 a.m. (HT) against the winner of the No. 8 UC Irvine vs. No. 9 UC Riverside match. UH reached the finals of last year's tournament before falling to UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are the No. 2 seed at this year's event, while Long Beach State, which has captured 11 of the 13 titles at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, is the No. 3 seed.
The Rainbow Wahine are led by freshman
Petra Melounova who is ranked at No. 64 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) poll. Melounova finished the regular season with a 13-1 overall record while recording a perfect 5-0 mark in conference. Since her opening dual match loss to Washington's Stacey Fung, Melounova has reeled off 13 wins in her last 16 matches with the remaining three going unfinished. Twelve of her wins have come in straight sets. In doubles, she and partner
Roxanne Resma are UH's top duo and come into this week ranked at No. 68 nationally. Last week at Cal State Fullerton, Melounova and Resma upset 51
st-ranked Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela by a break, 7-5 to capture the doubles point.
Junior
Marina Hruba leads the team with a 14-3 overall record and is 6-0 in the Big West. After a slow start to the season, Hruba, who has played at No. 3 all season, has come on strong to win 13 of her last 14 matches.
Senior
Cindy Nguyen enters the tournament with a 12-6 overall record and a 6-1 Big Wets record. Nguyen, one of the most decorated players in UH history, looks to help lead the 'Bows this week in her final conference tourney. She has won her last four-straight matches since switching to playing on the No. 2 court.
