INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team is coming off a strong week as it heads into the 2017 Big West Tournament which will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Rainbow Warriors are seeded at No. 5 and will face No. 4 UC Irvine in the first round on Thursday, April 27 at 6:00 a.m HT.
Last week, the Rainbow Warriors went 1-1 on the road, falling in a battle at UC Irvine then bouncing back to claim their first regular season conference match since 2014 at UC Riverside. Against the Anteaters, UCI opened the match by earning the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. But in singles, the 'Bows rallied, taking all six of the matches into the third set. UH was able to record two wins in third set super tie-breakers with No. 2
Felix Albert coming back to defeat Luca Marquard, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-5 and No. 5
Spencer Travalino also battling back to knock off Bruce Man-Son-Hing, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Albert, the reigning Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, improved to 4-11 overall and raised his conference record to 3-2 with a pair of wins last week. He is now tied with
Igor Kolaric for the team lead in wins. Albert helped to lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 5-2 victory at UC Riverside this past Sunday—its first BWC win since 2014. He clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kyle McCann on the No. 2 court.
