HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (9-4, 4-0 Big West) got back on the winning track with a 5-2 win over Elon in a dual match on Wednesday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine captured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of
Cindy Nguyen and
Klara Pribylova cruised over Elon's Maria Paraja and Alex Koniaev, 6-1. But the Phoenix's No. 3 pair of Suzanne Zenoni and Kristen Ward evened things with a 6-3 win over
Nikola Dolakova and
Marina Hruba. UH's No. 2 team of
Michelle Pits and
Roxanne Resma then secured the point by holding off Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi by a break, 6-4.
Hawai'i went on to take a 3-0 lead over Elon with
Petra Melounova sweeping Lucas on the No. 2 court, 6-1, 6-4 and UH's Resma defeating Ward on the No. 4 court, 7-5, 6-2. Elon then cut their deficit to 3-2 with Paraja defeating UH's Pits at No. 5, 7-5, 6-3 and Nguyen falling to Braschi at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4. The match then hinged on the last two matches--both of which went to three sets. Hawai'i's No. 6 Dolakova then clinched the match with a three-set win over Sofia Edo, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2. UH's No. 3 Hruba bounced back after dropping the first set to win the next two to knock off Zenoni, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to conclude the match.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head to California to begin a three-match road swing beginning at No. 5 Stanford on Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 pm HT. The 'Bows will then play a pair of conference road matches at Cal Poly on Tuesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 30 at UC Santa Barbara.
