Beach Volleyball Wins Two On Home-Opening Weekend

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's beach volleyball team posted wins over No. 9 Stetson, 3-2, and Loyola Marymount, 4-1, Friday on the first day of the Queen's Cup at Queen's Sandbox in Waikiki Beach.
 
The Queen's Cup is the home opener for the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine (6-0), who are undefeated through six matches for the first time in program history.
 
In the opener against Stetson, the teams split Courts 4 and 5 with the UH's Ari Homayun and Carly Kan winning in straight sets, 21-16, 21-13. The Hatters tied up the match with a three-set win at Court 5 over UH's Hannah Zalopany and Amy Ozee.
 
But the Rainbow Wahine responded and secured the dual with wins at Courts 2 and 3 as Nikki Taylor and Ka'iwi Schucht won 21-17, 21-15 at Court 2 and Emily Maglio and Laurel Weaver clinched it with a 21-12, 21-14 victory at Court 3.
 
Against LMU, Hawai'i took the first three completed matches at Courts 5, 4, and 3 for the team victory. Homayun and Kan posted their second win of the day, 21-10, 21-15 while Zalopany teamed with Norene Iosia for a 21-17, 21-18 victory.
 
Maglio and Weaver provided their second clincher at Court 3, easily winning, 21-10, 21-16 while Taylor and Schucht also won in straight sets 21-18, 21-15 at Court 2.
 
UH's top tandem of Mikayla Tucker and Morgan Martin dropped both of their matches of the day, in three sets against Stetson and in straight-set to LMU.
 
In the opening match of the tournament, LMU edged Stetson 3-2 in a match that was decided at Court 1, where Sarah Sponcil and Savannah Slattery overcame a 1-0 deficit to win 15-10 in the third.
 
The tournament concludes on Saturday with three matches – UH versus LMU at 10:00 a.m., followed by LMU and Stetson at 12:30 p.m. The tourney wraps up with UH and Stetson at 3:00 p.m. All matches are free admission.
