Women's Basketball Taking Care Of Business

It's been more than a calendar year since a visiting Big West women's basketball team picked up a victory inside the Stan Sheriff Center, and that's just the way Hawai'i women's basketball coach Laura Beeman draws it up.

"The goal we set out with every single year is to split on the road and take care of home," Beeman said.

The Rainbow Wahine have indeed taken care of business at home, with a nine-game Big West home winning streak dating back to Jan. 28, 2016. But don't ask Beeman about the specifics of Hawai'i's home-court advantage. For her, it's just business as usual.

"I don't look at numbers, I don't know our record," Beeman said before thinking back. "I can recall two (home) games in the Big West that we lost. One was to Santa Barbara a couple years ago and the other was to Cal Poly. Other than that I don't know how many we've lost."

It turns out Beeman has only forgotten about one home Big West defeat, a 77-74 loss to UC Riverside last January. The loss to UC Santa Barbara she mentioned was actually more than four years ago, a 51-50 defeat back in January of 2013. The Cal Poly loss was a 78-74 overtime heartbreaker in January of 2014. The other 33 times Beeman and the Rainbow Wahine hosted a Big West foe all resulted in Hawai'i victories, often in convincing fashion.

"Everyone complains about having to travel here, but we have to do it every other week," Beeman said. "I don't have any sympathy for that. I want this to be a miserable place to play, absolutely."

Junior Sarah Toeaina, who is 18-1 in home Big West games in her career and leads Hawai'i in scoring with 17.1 points per game in Big West play this season, says she and her teammates take pride in protecting their home court.

"We like to create a little intimidation factor," she said. "Being able to represent the state is unlike any other college. It's not just the five of us on the court and the bench and our coaches, but the entire island and our state."

Since Beeman was hired and the Rainbow Wahine rejoined the Big West conference ahead of the 2012-13 season, Hawai'i has been nothing short of dominant against Big West opponents in the Stan Sheriff Center.
  • Hawai'i's current 9-game home Big West winning streak began on Jan. 28, 2016 when the 'Bows 62-53 win over Cal State Fullerton
  • The last time the Rainbow Wahine lost a home Big West game was Jan. 16, 2016 against UC Riverside (77-74)
  • The Rainbow Wahine are 25-1 (.962) in their last 26 Big West home games
  • Hawai'i is 33-3 (.917) in home Big West games since rejoining the league in 2012-13
  • Hawai'i's three home Big West losses in that time are by a combined total of eight points, including losses by one point, three points, and four points
  • Hawai'i went a perfect 8-0 at home in Big West play in 2014-15
The Rainbow Wahine begin a four-game home-stand on Wednesday when UC Riverside visits the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i will also host UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 11), UC Davis (Feb. 16) and CSUN (Feb. 18) before hitting the road again.
