HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team came from behind to edge out San Diego, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine evened their dual match record to 2-2 while the Toreros dropped to 1-2 overall.
 
In doubles, UH's No. 2 duo of Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova blanked USD's Maria-Paula Torres and Nicole Anderson, 6-0 to start the day. But the Toreros' No. 3 Katharina Kukaras and Sophia Chow defeated Hawai'i's Marina Hruba and Michelle Pits, 6-2. San Diego's No. 1 Colomba DiFilippo and Daniela Morales then held off UH's Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma by a break to capture the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
 
But in singles, the Rainbow Wahine battled all the way back. USD won the first singles match with DiFilippo holding off Pribylova, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to go up 2-0. But Hawai'i quickly tied things at 2-2 with No. 1 Nguyen winning in straight sets over Anderson, 6-4, 7-5 and Hruba defeated Morales in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4. San Diego then took a 3-2 lead with Kukaras knocking off Resma, 6-3, 7-5. With their backs against the wall, Hawai'i's final two players both rebounded after first set losses to win in three to defeat the Toreros. No. 2 Melounova fell in a tight first set to Gemma Garcia, 5-7 but came back to cruise to a 6-2 win in the second. Melounova jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third before Garcia won two straight to close to 5-4. But Melounova ended her match by breaking Garcia to win the match with a  6-4 win in the third. UH's No. 5 Pits then clinched the match coming from behind to defeat Torres, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Rainbow Wahine open their Big West season on Monday, Feb. 6 at 4:00 pm with a dual match against CSUN at the UH Tennis Complex.
