HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (4-2, 2-0 Big West) returns to the courts after a 10 days layoff to play two matches this week. First, the Rainbow Wahine will take on BYU (2-2, 0-0 WCC) on Thursday, February 23 at 3:30. Hawai'i will then battle perennial Big West power, Long Beach State (4-1, 2-0 BWC) on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine have won four of their last five matches—including their last three straight. Senior
Cindy Nguyen has led the charge and is on a five-match win streak, the last four wins coming on the No. 1 court. She has just dropped one set in the last five matches—which was in a win over 31
st-ranked Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss. Overall, she has a 7-2 record this season.
Freshman
Petra Melounova has also has a solid start to her Rainbow Wahine career. She has won four of her last five singles matches, with her match against CSUN going unfinished. Melounova started the season playing at No. 1 but has played the last four at No. 2.
BYU is led by senior Natella Nabieva who earned a straight set win on the No. 1 court against Boise State last week and fellow senior Savannah Ware-Avina who is 4-0 in dual matches thus far.
Long Beach State has won five of the last six Big West titles and 14 total conference crowns. The 49ers have three players who have already recorded 11 singles wins apiece. Maeva Razakasoa 11-6 overall record this season and a 4-1 record all at No. 1. Julie Gerard is 11-5 overall and 4-1 in dual matches on the No. 2 court. Maren Helgo is the third 49er with 11 singles wins. She is 11-7 overall and 2-2 in dual matches.
