Men’s Golf Wraps Up Play At Burns Intercollegiate

LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team concluded the 41st John A. Burns Intercollegiate in 17th place following Friday's final round at the Wailua Golf Course.
 
The Rainbow Warriors shot a final round 307 for a three-day score of 906. Fourth-ranked Virginia captured its first Burns title at 29-under 835 after a final round 284. In a battle for second place, No. 18 Texas A&M edged out No. 23 UNLV by one stroke and finished at 839.
 
Individually, Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips took medalist honors at 15-under 201, three strokes ahead of Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh. California's Collin Morikawa , UNLV's Harry Hall, and Virginia's Danny Walker finished in a three-way tie for third at 10-under 206.
 
The tournament was held at Wailua for the fourth straight year and Virginia's 835 total was the lowest during that span. Playing conditions on Friday were ideal with little wind and the top golfers took advantage with 10 scores in the 60s.
 
UH's top finisher was sophomore Cameron Kaneko, who shot a final round 75 to finish 4-over 220 for the tourney and a tie for 47th. Kaua'i native Pono Tokioka shot 73 to tie for 72nd place at 225.
 
Also competing for the Warriors were sophomore Sam Schwartz, who tied for 91st at 230; freshman Nick Nelson, who tied for 99th at 235, and freshman Trevor Hirata who placed 103rd at 238.
 
Sophomore Smart Kittirattanapaiboon led the UH contingent of individuals with a 2-over 74 and tie for 40th place. Freshman Taiga Iwasa and Desmond Mello tied for 104th (239), sophomore Bryden Salvador placed 107th (245), and freshman Shane Snow completed his first tournament at UH in 108th place at 247.
 
No. 46 Brigham Young finished in fourth place (856) followed by California and Santa Clara (860), Arizona (863), No. 41 Washington (868), UTEP and No. 45 New Mexico (869) rounding out the Top 10.
 
The Warriors will next compete at the Jack Rabbit Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., March 10-11.
