LIHUE, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team sits in 13
th place following the first round 298 at the 41
st John A. Burns Intercollegiate Wednesday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Jimmy Stanger shot a course record 10-under 62 to lead fourth-ranked Virginia, who leads the field at 20-under 268, eight strokes ahead of No. 18 Texas A&M (276). No. 23 UNLV (282), No. 46 Brigham Young (284) and Santa Clara (287) round out the top 5.
Leading the way for the Warriors is Kaua'i-native
Pono Tokioka and sophomore
Cameron Kaneko, who each shot even par 72. The pair are tied for 23
rd place. Tokioka posted three birdies and three bogeys during his round while Kaneko birdied four times during a six-hole stretch.
Freshmen
Nick Nelson and
Trevor Hirata, each competed in their first Burns Intercollegiate and carded 76 and 78, respectively. Sophomore
Sam Schwartz fired a first round 80.
Stanger holds a four-stroke lead over teammate Derek Bard and Arizona's Jordan Gumberg, who each shot 66.
Five Warriors competed as individuals –

Desmond Mello (83).
The tournament continues on Thursday with the second round with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start.
