HONOLULU –
Sarah Toeaina scored a career-high 27 points, but the Hawai'i women's basketball team came up just short against Idaho State, falling 64-62 in overtime in the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday night.
Toeaina was an efficient 9-of-14 from the field and 9-of-11 at the free throw line, and added five rebounds for Hawai'i (5-4).
Lahni Salanoa added 13 points, her fourth-consecutive double-digit scoring output, and
Makenna Woodfolk added a team-high nine rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine got off to a strong start, taking a 19-18 lead into the second quarter after hitting 7-of-12 shots in the first. Idaho State picked up the defense for the final three quarters and overtime, holding UH to just 14-of-43 (32.5 percent) over the final 35 minutes.
The Bengals (6-3) took a 29-26 lead into halftime and then built the advantage to 40-30 early in the third quarter. Hawai'i, however, responded with an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to 41-43 and keep within striking distance. Idaho State built a big lead once again to start the fourth quarter, pulling ahead 50-41 with 8:55 to play, but Hawai'i answered one more time. The 'Bows closed the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to pull even at 52-52, capped by Woodfolk's layup with 1:20 to play.
The Rainbow Wahine came up with two crucial plays – a defensive stop then an offensive rebound – in the final minute, but
Tia Kanoa's go-ahead shot in the final seconds was off the mark.
Idaho State broke the 52-all tie by scoring the first six points of overtime, putting Hawai'i's resilience to the test one more time. The 'Bows were able to cut the deficit to just two points twice down the stretch, but weren't able to get any closer before the final horn.
The Bengals and 'Bows each shot 38 percent from the field for the game, but Idaho State managed eight more attempts than Hawai'i after a 16-8 advantage on the offensive glass. Idaho State finished with a 44-32 rebounding advantage overall.
Woodfolk had seven points, nine rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist in the game, while Kanoa added four points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals, playing all 45 minutes.
UH matched a season-low with just 11 turnovers in the game and forced 15 on the other end.
It was the final game of a seven-game home-stand for Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine will begin a three-game road trip at Arizona on Dec. 17 before facing Oregon (Dec. 20) and Texas A&M (Dec. 22) at the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas.
