Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Toeaina's Late Free Throws Lift Rainbow Wahine To Victory

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team took down San Diego on Sunday night in a nail biting 64-63 overtime win. The win gives the Rainbow Wahine the Bank of Hawai'i Classic crown for the second consecutive year.

Sophomore Makenna Woodfolk took charge early, hitting all four of her first-quarter shots, including two three pointers. She finished with a career high with 20 points, tied with senior Sarah Toeaina for the game-high. Woodfolk also led the team with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and third of her career.

Knotted at 55-all after regulation, both teams were fired up entering overtime. Woodfolk opened the extra period putting UH on the board first to take a 57-55 lead, but San Diego answered immediately. After two ties and four lead-changes in overtime alone, Toeaina went to the free throw line with 3.5 seconds remaining in and Hawai'i trailing 63-62. She made both, her only free throw attempts of the game, and Hawai'i survived San Diego's half-court desperation heave at the buzzer to pick up its third consecutive victory.

The game featured a total of nine ties and eight lead-changes, and after San Diego's Sydney Williams hit a pair of free throws with 1:15 left in the third quarter to cut the Hawai'i lead to 40-39, neither team led by more two points for the final 16:15 of the game.

Aubrey Ward-El led the Toreros was with 16 points, shooting 5-of-6 at the free throw line and sinking the final shot of regulation with 52 seconds left that eventually forced overtime.

Hawai'i shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) for the game while the Toreros hit 36.4 percent (24-of-66) of their shots. San Diego held a 38-33 rebounding advantage, and an 18-11 advantage in turnovers. The Toreros had a decisive free throw advantage, as they hit their first 13 free throws, and finished the game 13-of-14 at the line. UH was 6-of-9 at the free throw line, but it was Toeaina's two in the final seconds of overtime that mattered most.

Following their impressive performances, Woodfolk was named to the All-Tournament team and Toeaina was named Tournament MVP.

The Bows play again at home next weekend, hosting the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Their first game against Marist will be on Friday at 5:30 pm in the Stan Sheriff Center. UH will also face Purdue (Nov. 25) and USC (Nov. 26) in the Showdown.
