WAIPAHU, O''ahu – The University of Hawai'i soccer sent its eight seniors off with a 1-1 tie against Cal Poly in the 2017 home finale on Sunday evening.
After a scoreless first half, Hawai'i senior
Sonest Furtado put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 1-0 in the 58th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Furtado took a pass up the middle from
Raisa Strom-Okimoto, dribbled passed Cal Poly goalkeeper Sophia Brown, and placed the ball into the back of the net for the score. It was the second assist of the year for Strom-Okimoto.
The 'Bows (6-8-1, 1-4-1 Big West) were unable to keep a feisty Cal Poly (7-9-3, 2-4-1 Big West) squad off the board, however. The Mustangs evened the score in the 74th minute when Chelsea Barry placed a free kick into the box, and after one hop, Emily Hansen headed it in from point-blank range, beating UH keeper
Alexis Mata to tie the game.
Both teams had good looking opportunities in the final 35 minutes of the game, but Mata and Brown each came up with game-saving saves, resulting in the 1-1 draw.
The tie snaps Hawai'i's seven-game losing streak to the Mustangs, who were previously 7-0-0 all-time against UH.
Cal Poly held a 20-15 advantage in shots in the contest, and an 8-4 lead in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Strom-Okimoto had a team-high five shots in the game, and two on goal. Cal Poly's Jessica Johnson had a game-high eight shots. Mata finished the game with seven saves for UH, while Brown tallied three saves.
