LAHAINA, Maui—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened their 2017 season along with Kansas and Washington State in the UH Spring Invitational at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch in Lahaina, Maui on Thursday.
 
In doubles, the lone Rainbow Wahine win came from the sophomore duo of Marina Hruba and Roxanne Resma who doubled up on Washington State's Melisa Ates and Victoria Matejevic, 6-3. The Kansas pair of Nina Khmelnitckaia and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum held off Hawai'i's Petra Melounova and Cindy Nguyen by a break, 6-4 as did the Jayhawks' Maria Toran Ribes and Tatiana Nikolaeva who defeated UH's Michelle Pits and Klara Pribylova, 6-4.
 
No. 119 Melounova and Nguyen were the only Rainbow Wahine to notch singles wins on the first day of the tournament. Melounova split the first two hard fought sets with Kansas' Bernard-Feigenbaum. But Melounova pulled away in the third to earn the victory, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1. Nguyen cruised in the first set, but stumbled in the second before bouncing back to defeat Washington State's Barbora Michalkova in three, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. UH's Pribylova battled but fell in a close, straight-set match by a break apiece to the Cougars' Ates, 6-4, 6-4, as did UH's Resma who also fell in a tight match to KU's Khmelnitckaia, 7-5, 6-4.
 
All three teams will compete on the second day of the UH Spring Invitational on Friday.
