HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to UC Santa Barbara both team's Big West opener, 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Gauchos improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference while the 'Bows fell to 0-3 and 0-1 in the Big West. It marked the end of a very busy week for the Rainbow Warriors, playing five matches in seven days to start their season.
The Gauchos earned the doubles points with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. UCSB's Morgan Mays and Simon Freund blanked UH's
Felix Albert and
Ruben Blattner, 6-0. Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Anders Holm then defeated the No. 2 Hawai'i duo of
Marcel Chan and
Igor Kolaric, 6-3.
UC Santa Barbara won all six singles matches in straight sets for the sweep. On the No. 1 court, Mays held off Albert, 6-1, 6-4 and at No. 4 UCSB's Chase Masciorini knocked off UH's
Fabian Woehrl by the same score, 6-1, 6-4.
Next up, members of the men's tennis team will compete in the USTA Challenger tournament on Jan. 18 in Lahaina, Maui. The Rainbow Warriors next dual match will be on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1:00 pm against Portland State.
