HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team hosted its home opener against Washington on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Huskies pulled away down the stretch to defeat the Rainbow Wahine, 6-1.
 
In doubles, Washington edged out the 'Bows to earn the first point of the match. After falling on the No. 3 court, UH's No. 2 duo of Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova evened things with a 6-4 win over UW's Stacey Fung and Katarina Kopcalic. The Huskies' No. 1 pair of Miki Kobayashi and Nour Abbes captured the point by holding off Hawai'i's Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma by a break, 7-5.
 
The Huskies won the first two singles matches on the No. 4 and 2 courts before the Rainbow Wahine broke through with No. 6 Pribylova earning a straight-set win over Kopcalic, 6-3, 6-1. The 'Bows were behind 1-3 in the match, but all of the last three remaining matches went the distance with the UH players all fighting back with second set wins to force a third and deciding set. But the Huskies proved to be too much as they rallied to all win their matches. No. 3 Marina Hruba fell to Kobayashi, 6-3, 2-6,6-1; No. 1 Melounova dropped her match to UW's Fung, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3; and No. 5 Michelle Pits lost to Kenedi Hance, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will host their second dual match of the year against Kansas State this Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11:00 am at the UH Tennis Complex.
