WAIPAHU, O'ahu—All nine members of the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team competed in the open singles tournament on the opening day of the USTA Aloha Cup held at the Central O'ahu Regional Park in Waipahu, O'ahu on Friday.
 
Amongst the winners in the Round of 32 were Felix Albert, Marcel Chan, Igor Kolaric, Ruben Blattner, Fabian Woehrl, and Eric Kenneth.
 
Both Albert and Woehrl had dominant performances, blanking their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Albert defeated Reynwood Makishi while Woehrl knocked off Sean Kiyoshi. Chan won arguably the closest match of the day, defeating Phuc Huynh in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6, 6-3. Unfortunatley, Kolaric faced off against teammate Spencer Travalino. Kolaric held off Travalino in stra0ght sets, 6-4, 6-2. Blattner advanced to the Round of 16 after his opponent, Richard Pentecostes withdrew due to illness after Blattner won the first set 6-0. Kenneth also advanced due to withdrawl as his opponent, Adrian Boix pulled out due to injury with Kenneth leading 4-3 in the first set.
 
The Aloha Cup continues bright and early with 8:00 a.m. start times slated for Saturday, Sept. 30. The doubles competition also commences on Saturday.
