KAHUKU, O'ahu – Another week, another personal best and an overall victory for University of Hawai'i cross country sophomore
Camille Campos, who led the Rainbow Wahine to a second-place finish at UH's own 16th Annual Big Wave Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course.
Campos jumped out to the top spot for the second consecutive week after a very productive off-season, edging out Central Florida's Anne-Marie Blaney by just over two seconds for the 17:48.90 victory in the women's 5k race. She topped her previous best 5k mark, set last week at the BYU-Hawai'i Invitational, improving by 11.1 seconds.
Although UCF dominated the top five overall scorers, UH notched a pair of additional runners in the top 10. Junior
Montana Martinez rolled in right behind the Knights' pack, coming in sixth in 18:57.60. Finishing seventh, senior
Alli Cross registered a time of 19:20.40.
Next among the Rainbow Wahine scorers on the second O'ahu-based meet of the year, sophomore
Tristan Setzer (11th) and freshman
Maddie Fuhrman (12th) went back-to-back in a split-second finish at 19:40.2 and 19:40.6, respectively.
Rounding out the 10 Rainbow Wahine performers competing at the Big Wave were sophomore
Haley Beaumont (14th, 19:56.70), sophomore
Kai Hoshijo (27th, 20:39.10), sophomore
Giovanna Casazza (30th, 20:55.20), freshman
Caitlyn Krueger (37th, 22:33.40) and sophomore
Paige Sullivan (38th, 22:44.30).
The Rainbow Wahine finished with a score of 37 and a 19:05.54 average race time. UCF topped the field with a 23-point combined score and average mark of 18:41.00.
In two weeks, the Rainbow Wahine make their first trek off-island, heading to Seattle, Wash. for the first 6k race of the year at the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by University of Washington.
