SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team fired a first round 290 Friday and is currently tied for 14
th place at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.
Senior
Pono Tokioka and freshman
Desmond Mello even fired even-par 71 to lead the Rainbow Warriors. Kent State leads the field at 264, five strokes clear of Baylor (269). Kansas and LSU (270) and South Carolina (273) round out the top five.
Making his UH debut, Mello, a 2016 Moanalua High School graduate, posted three birdies on his back nine to close out at even par. Tokioka had five birdies and five bogeys on his round of 71. Both are tied for 37
th place.
Junior
Smart Kittirattanapaiboon and sophomore
Sam Schwartz each shot 3-over 74 and are tied for 67
th. Sophomore
Bryden Salvador is tied for 86
th at 78.
Kent State's Josh Whalen has a one-stroke lead over a pack of three golfers after a 7-under 64. Among the groups is teammate Ian Holt, South Carolina's Scott Stevens, and LSU's Luis Gagne.
The tournament continues with the second round on Saturday.
