SEATTLE – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine cross country team put in its first 6k race on Saturday at Lincoln Park, starting its 2016 mainland slate with a bang. UH improved six positions from last year's finish to come in third behind
Camille Campos' dramatic personal record finish.
A sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., Campos sliced 51.8 seconds off of her standing 6k time, crossing the line as Hawai'i's leader in 10th place, logging a mark of 21:08.80. In last year's meet, Campos also paced UH, coming in 35th and nearly 67 seconds slower.
So far, Campos has topped the UH squad in each meet of the 2016 season.
Junior
Montana Martinez didn't track far behind, crossing the finish line in 15th for her first 6k of the year – her fastest since last year's Big West Championships at 22:00.60. Next for the Rainbow Wahine came another upperclassman, senior
Alli Cross, coming in at 22:40.10 for 29th place.
Freshman
Maddie Fuhrman continued her strong rookie campaign, now scoring for UH in each meet this year. She crossed as UH's fourth scorer with a career-first 6k time of 22:51.00 in 34th place. Rounding out the quintet of scorers was sophomore
Tristan Setzer at 23:11.60 in 40th place, slicing 27.3 seconds off her personal best for another big Wahine PR.
Just outside the top five, sophomore
Haley Beaumont was 42nd at 23:28.80, ahead of senior
Caitlyn Foss (45th, 23:46.70) and rookie
Kai Hoshijo (53rd, 24:36.10).
"We're really pleased with a fine early-season effort today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Camille was very strong, and across the board there were significant PR efforts by many. It was a great 6k debut for Maddie, and Montana, Tristan and Kai averaged a minute improvement from 2015. It was a great meet to build on."
The Rainbow Wahine trimmed over 1:40 off last year's total time, amounting to an 18-second improvement in average time. In 2015, UH was ninth in the meet with 195 points, with a huge swing in 2016 to third place and a score of 99 behind host Washington (18) and Washington State (67).
Next it's back to the islands and a return to familiar turf on the north shore, as UH competes in the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 24 at Kahuku Golf Course.
