Newcomer Leads Men’s Golf At Olympic Club

Day 1 Results

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – University of Hawai'i rookie Taiga Iwasa shot rounds of 76 and 73 in his Rainbow Warrior debut to lead UH at the USF Olympic Intercollegiate Monday at The Olympic Club.
 
Iwasa, a walk-on from Hong Kong, is currently tied for 38th place with a 7-over 149 total.
 
As a team, Hawai'i is in 14th place at 617 (309-308). BYU leads the field at 568 followed by Saint Mary's (575), Notre Dame (578), San Francisco and UC Davis (581), UAB (582), TCU and Fresno State (583), Cal Poly and Santa Clara (588), Loyola Marymount (589), San Diego (594), Dominican (607) and UH (617).
 
TCU's Stefano Mazzoli has a one-stroke lead over a pack of four golfers after firing rounds of 73 and 66 for a 3-under 139 total.
 
Sophomore Sam Schwartz is three strokes behind Iwasa at 152 (74-78) and is tied for 52nd. Sophomore Cameron Kaneko posted rounds of 80 and 78 for a 158 total and is tied for 67th.  Senior Pono Tokioka is in 70th place at 159 (80-79) and junior Smart kittirattanapaiboon is tied for 74th at 162 (79-83).
 
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third and final round.
