LA'IE, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine cross country team opened the 2016 season on a high note Saturday morning up north, arising triumphant over an all-Hawai'i opponent slate in the BYU-Hawai'i Invitational on the school's campus.
"Overall, we're really pleased with how we ran in our first competitive effort," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Our first-time runners ran well in representing us, and we had really strong efforts by Camille and Alli. Throughout the squad, we hit goals that we had in mind in terms of running together and we want to keep building on this performance."
Leading the pack, Bakersfield, Calif. sophomore
Camille Campos jumped out front quickly and never let up, claiming the individual championship with a personal-best mark of 18:00 in the 5k. Her finish came within 18 seconds of the course record and exceeded her previous top time by over 31 seconds.
"She ran 18-flat, almost by herself from the gun, so that bodes well for what can happen as the season moves forward and others are pushing her," Boyce noted.
Tracking in second was Tualatin, Ore. senior
Alli Cross at 19:07, beating out BYUH's Jessica Horrocks by a full nine seconds. Freshman
Maddie Fuhrman made an outstanding debut, coming in fourth at 19:27 in her first collegiate appearance. Sophomore
Tristan Setzer secured the fourth top five finish for UH at 19:39. The final UH scorer on the morning, senior
Caitlyn Foss arrived in ninth with a time of 20:09.
UH carried a big roster into the event, with sophomore
Giovanna Casazza (13th, 20:21) leading the next seven Rainbow Wahine, followed by sophomore
Kai Hoshijo (14th, 20:27), sophomore
Haley Beaumont (24th, 21:07), freshman
Lisa Tashiro (29th, 22:14),
Paige Sullivan (32nd, 22:32), freshman
Caitlyn Krueger (34th, 22:53) and junior
Emily Stack (37th, 24:18).
For their efforts with all five scorers in the top 10, UH claimed the team championship with a 21-point total, beating out Hawai'i Pacific at 48 points.
The Rainbow Wahine host the first of two 2016 meets next weekend, bringing the Big Wave Invitational back to Kahuku Golf Course for its 16th edition on Sept. 3. Last season, UH finished second in the home meet at Kahuku. UH will also close the season up north, hosting the Big West Championships on the same course on Oct. 29.
