FULLERTON, Calif.--The No. 56 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (6-5, 2-1 Big West) heads to California this week for three matches. The Rainbow Wahine will begin with a pair of conference matches against Cal State Fullerton (March 3) and UC Irvine (March 5) follwed by a match against an old conference rival, No. 26 Fresno State (March 6).
Although the 'Bows fell in two tough matches last week against UC Santa Barbara and No. 36 Oregon, Hawai'i rose eight spots to No. 56 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
Hawai'i's freshman-standout
Marina Hruba continues her dominance, winning both her matches last week to raise her overall record to 13-0 and 10-0 in dual matches. Against UCSB, she defeated Lou Adler, 6-0, 6-3 and followed that performance by defeating Oregon's Nia Rose, 6-2, 6-0. Both matches were on the No. 2 court. Paulina Petriskova are 8-5 and 7-3 in dual matches thus far. They have played all but one match on the No. 3 court.
Cindy Nguyen has played all 10 dual matches on the No. 1 court. She has won three of her last five matches--including a straight set win over Oregon's Kennan Johnson, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, she and rookie Roxane Resma have a team-best 8-4 overall record together. In dual matches they are 6-3 at No. 2 and just had their six match win-streak snapped against Oregon.
Resma currently has an 8-5 overall singles matches playing primarily at No. 5 and No. 6. She is 7-3 in dual matches and has won six of her last seven matches. Resma came through with a hard-fought singles win over Oregon's Christi Woodson, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
