HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team used its best shooting performance of the young season to earn a 72-50 victory over Youngstown State on the first day of the Bank of Hawai'i Classic in the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday.
The Rainbow Wahine shot 48 percent from the field to extend their home winning streak to seven games and improve to 1-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Hawai'i defense held the Penguins to just 27 percent shooting from the field and helped the 'Bows to a 43-32 rebounding advantage.
Five Hawai'i scorers reached double-figures in the game, led by sophomore
Olivia Crawford's 13 points, matching her career-high. Sophomore
Lahni Salanoa had her first career double-double with career highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Briana Harris also scored 12 points and junior
Sarah Toeaina added 11. Making her collegiate debut, freshman
Keleah-Aiko Koloi scored 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting and added four rebounds.
After trailing 8-6 late in the first quarter, the Rainbow Wahine used a 24-4 run to build a 30-12 lead late in the first half before taking a 37-18 lead into halftime. Youngstown State made a push in the third quarter, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 15-10, but Hawai'i shot 57 percent (8-of-14) from the field in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
The 'Bows went 5-for-18 from 3-point range in the game, with Salanoa and freshman
Julissa Tago each connecting on two. Tago scored her first collegiate points in the game, finishing with eight to go with five rebounds.
Hawai'i will wrap up the Bank of Hawai'i Classic on Sunday against New Mexico State. With a New Mexico State victory over Sacramento State earlier Friday, the Rainbow Wahine and Aggies will duel for tournament championship honors at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
