SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i cross country team wrapped up the 2016 season on Friday Morning at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The squad came away from the NCAA West Regional meet with its highest team finish in 12 years and best individual top finisher since 2007.
It should come as no surprise that the top individual Rainbow Wahine finish belonged to sophomore
Camille Campos, who paced UH in each race she ran during the 2016 campaign. She jumped out to a 36th-place finish for the highest individual Regional rank since Chantelle Wilder in 2007 in Eugene, Ore. Campos' time of 20:25.9 was her fastest on the course and second-fastest on the season. Despite the high-ranking finish, Campos will not move on to the national meet, finishing outside the top 25.
Junior
Montana Martinez followed in 64th with a career-best 21:01.9 in the 6k, dropping 11.2 seconds and improving her placement by 111 spots with one year remaining in her UH career.
Campos was third among Big West finishers in the meet, while Martinez was seventh.
UH's No. 3 runner all season, senior
Alli Cross was unable to start the race due to injury.
In her absence, sophomore
Haley Beaumont turned in a sound 22:40.2 to finish 178th. Senior
Caitlyn Foss followed in 188th with a time of 22:48.7, and sophomore
Tristan Setzer rounded out the scorers in 190th with a time of 22:52.6. Rookie
Maddie Fuhrman wrapped up the troupe with a 195th-place finish at 23:01.7 in her first NCAA postseason race.
"Great efforts today by the entire team," third-year cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Running out front, Camille and Montana ran awesome and did everything they could to get to a national meet with big personal bests on this course. Haley gave her team a tremendous effort today. I'm so proud of all of them for the way they competed."
The Rainbow Wahine improved eight positions over last season to 25th, logging the best team finish since UH was 17th during the 2004 meet in Fresno, Calif. Aiding the upward jump, UH sliced 310 points off its scoring total over last season's finish.
"Top 20 was the goal coming in, and was possible with Alli in the race. For them to hang on and run top 25 was a big step forward for this group."
In addition to the top 25 finish in today's Regional, the Rainbow Wahine are coming off the best conference finish since 2004 with a fifth-place final at the Big West Championships. The Rainbow Wahine will return five of their top seven runners going into next season, with the graduation of Cross and Foss.
