KAHUKU, O'ahu – Paced by the efforts of sophomore
Camille Campos and junior
Montana Martinez, the University of Hawai'i cross country team reached its highest conference championship finish since 2004, earning fifth place at Saturday's Big West Cross Country Championships at the Kahuku Golf Course.
Â
"Overall, I felt the team had a great performance," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "We were hoping to be more competitive than last year, and moving up to fifth place out of nine schools is a tremendous accomplishment for these young ladies."
Â
The Rainbow Wahine finished seventh in last year's meet in Riverside, Calif., while the team came in ninth in the two consecutive seasons prior. A young team that is dominated by sophomores, UH continues to make significant progress each season.
Â
Although Martinez served as the pack pace leader for the first half of the race, it was Campos who rose to the top spot for the Rainbow Wahine, fighting through blustery north shore winds and intermittent rain to come down the chute in seventh with a time of 21:50.6 – earning the highest individual conference finish since Victoria Chang in 2003.Â
Â
"I think her performance was outstanding – maybe a little pressure running at home with the accomplishments she's had the past few weeks could have a tendency to cause one to press a little bit, but I thought she handled the situation great," Boyce said. "You have to give her credit for having a great race this morning."
Â
Martinez also came on strong down the stretch for UH, crossing the line in 13th with a time of 22:26.6 in her third Big West outing. Both runners skyrocketed up the standings over last year's finish, with Martinez improving from 22nd, while Campos rose up from 47th.
Â
Running on their home course configured for the 6k, Hawai'i earned three more top-50 finishers to round out the scoring group. Placing 28th in spite of ankle issues, senior
Alli Cross was 28th in 23:12.7, followed by sophomore
Tristan Setzer at 23:33.9 and senior
Caitlyn Foss in 43rd at 23:46.6. Running her fourth Big West meet, Foss recorded her highest career finish at the conference meet.
Â
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine, freshman
Maddie Fuhrman was 51st (24:14.7), sophomore
Haley Beaumont was 63rd (25:03.8), sophomore
Giovanna Casazza was 64th (25:26.2) and freshman
Kai Hoshijo was 65th (25:30.2).
Â
With the regular season and conference championship out of the way, next for the Rainbow Wahine is a date at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento on Friday, Nov. 11. The meet is scheduled to run at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, the site of the Capital Cross Challenge in mid-October – where UH set PR's for nearly all runners earlier this season.
