SUNNYVALE, Calif. – There's something to be said for a team peaking at the right time, and the University of Hawai'i Cross Country team has demonstrated that's their path with another set of career-high and historic performances at Saturday's Bronco Invitational at Sunnyvale's Baylands Regional Park.
Turning in her fifth personal best in as many meets, sophomore
Camille Campos slashed another 41 seconds off her 6k time to come down the chute in third at the 170-runner meet, only topped by Loyola Marymount's (unattached) Danielle Shanahan and Texas Tech's Jocelyn Caro. For the second consecutive meet, now dropping to 20:03.4, her time sets a new all-time program benchmark.
Campos was hardly alone in the slashing effort, as the UH squad came together to earn eighth place in the team rankings with an average time of 21:26.1, improving from 13th last year with a 32-second average decrease.
"It was an excellent team performance today, as indicated by five personal bests through our top five today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Camille was awesome again, Montana [Martinez] ran tough, and there was a big breakthrough by
Alli Cross today. I'm very happy for her and the entire group and we're in a good place as we head into the Big West Conference Championships. We're very excited for this group and very proud of them."
Junior
Montana Martinez was second among UH scorers, coming in 24th on a time of 21:13.1, edging out her career best set two weeks ago by just under six seconds. Just over 10 seconds and five positions separated Martinez from the senior, Cross, who came in 29th with a time of 21:23.6 – lopping 37.3 seconds of her previous top 6k.
Extending her stellar rookie scoring campaign,
Maddie Fuhrman finished 79th in 22:06.5, stepping to the challenge with a 35.9-second improvement on her personal best. Rounding out the scorers, sophomore
Tristan Setzer chipped a large interval off her PR for the second consecutive meet, finishing 90th in a time of 22:23.7 – a 15-second improvement.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine, senior
Caitlyn Foss was 107th (22:47.2), sophomore
Haley Beaumont was 131st (23:13.7), sophomore
Giovanna Casazza was 144th in her career-first 6k (23:41.1) and freshman
Kai Hoshijo was 159th (24:18.7).
The Rainbow Wahine wrapped the regular season in Sunnyvale and are off next week for training and preparation for the big one. UH will host the Big West Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29 at Kahuku Golf Course on O'ahu's north shore.
At last year's BWC meet, UH finished seventh. However, Martinez came in as UH's top runner at 40th. At her current pace, team leader Campos would defeat the meet-winning time by 24.1 seconds, while Martinez and Cross would both have ranked in the top 20 with their current marks.
