SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Cross Country squad returned to the mainland for the second time this season, and again saw leaps in improvement. The team registered five personal bests and finished 10th against a very competitive field at the Capital Cross Challenge, Saturday morning at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
It was a solid primer for the Rainbow Wahine, taking in a preview competition on the future course for the NCAA West Regional meet in November, and the UH runners did not disappoint.
Tallying her fourth new personal best of the season, Bakersfield, Calif. sophomore
Camille Campos was the UH frontrunner, lopping 23.68 seconds off her previous 6k career best for a second-place time of 20:44.4. Campos was only outpaced by Arizona State's Chelsey Albertson. In last year's meet,
Alli Cross topped the Rainbow Wahine in 18th place on the then-5k Haggin Oaks course. Her latest PR boost generated the fastest 6k time since Cheryl Smith in 2000, ranking Campos among the fastest at the distance on modern-era record.
Also pushing for a personal record, junior
Montana Martinez was next for UH in 20th place, registering a 21:19.0 for a 2.26-second improvement. A senior for UH, Cross followed in 73rd with a time of 22:09.6, just seconds from adding another career mark.
Into the chute as the fourth UH scorer, sophomore
Tristan Setzer delivered the largest margin of improvement among the scorers, coming in 99th with a time of 22:38.7 – slicing 32.9 seconds off her previous best. For the Sherwood Park, Alberta native, that's consecutive races setting significant PR marks. Rounding out the scoring quintet, freshman
Maddie Fuhrman scored for the fourth time in as many races, finishing 103rd with a time of 22:42.4, a career-best mark by 8.6 seconds.
Also competing for UH were
Haley Beaumont (121st, 23:08.6),
Caitlyn Foss (131st, 23:23.8) and
Kai Hoshijo, who turned in a team-leading 46.6 improvement in 148th at 23:49.5.
"The team competed well with great times on a fast course," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "We can be a competitive team in the Big West with performances like these. Kudos to Camille on a huge PR, one of many on the day."
Hawai'i finished 10th out of 19 teams in action, logging a score of 188, just a hair behind fellow Big West member UC Riverside. Last year in a smaller field for the 5k, UH finished sixth among 10 teams racing.
Next on the slate for the Rainbow Wahine is the final regular season meet on O'ahu, heading to Sand Island for the Chaminade Invitational next Saturday, Oct. 8.
