HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-3, 0-0 Big West) knocked off No. 64 Arizona (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12), 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
After just getting edged out by No. 74 San Jose State, 4-3, the Rainbow Wahine stunned the Wildcats winning the first four points of the day. UH captured the doubles point for the second straight match winning on Courts 2 & 3. Arizona won the first match on Court 1, but Hawai'i's
Cindy Nguyen and
Roxanne Resma defeated UA's Inge Hendrikx and Camila Wesbrooks, 6-2 at No. 2 while
Marina Hruba and
Paulina Petriskova captured the point with a 6-2 win over Samantha Czarniak and Devin Chypyha.
In singles, the 'Bows won the first three singles matches to clinch the match. UH's two freshman won their matches first with Hruba defeating UA's Shayne Austin, 6-2, 6-1. With the win, Hruba remains unbeaten this season with an 8-0 singles record. Today's match was her first dual match playing at No. 2. Resma also won her match in straight sets, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hendrikx.
Sarah Gealer then clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kinga Gartner on the No. 3 court.
The Rainbow Wahine has 11 days before they open Big West Conference play against Cal Poly on Feb. 6 at the UH Tennis Complex.
