HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-4, 0-0 Big West) fell to No. 72 San Jose State in a close match, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
Hawai'i captured the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. The 'Bows won on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. UH's No. 3 duo of
Marina Hruba and
Paulina Petriskova nearly blanked San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi and Justine Deleval, 6-1 while No. 2
Cindy Nguyen and
Roxanne Resma held off SJSU's Sybille Gauvain and Marine Dans with a tie-breaker win, 7-6 (6).
In singles, No. 6 Resma started things off by dispatching Deleval in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Hruba kept her win-streak alive with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Gaelle Rey on the No. 3 court. Hruba is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in dual matches. However with Hawai'i up 3-0, the Spartans started to make their charge, winning in straight sets on the No. 2, 1 and 4 courts. The match hinged on the final match of the day with the score tied at 3-3. San Jose State's Kobayashi won the first set over UH's Petriskova in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (4). Petriskova came back to even the match by winning the second set, 6-4, but Kobayashi won the third set, 6-3 and therefore the match 4-3.
Up next for the Rainbow Wahine are the No. 64 Arizona Wildcats on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the UH Tennis Complex.
