HONOLULU—The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-3, 0-0 Big West) takes on a pair of ranked teams this week. First, the Rainbow Wahine will take on No. 72 San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 11:00 am, followed by No. 64 Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2:00 pm.
Hawai'i split their two matches this past week, holding off Nevada, 4-3 but falling to No. 56 Washington, 6-1. Rookie
Marina Hruba continued her hot start to the season, winning both of her singles matches to remain unbeaten thus far this young season. Hruba improved to 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Wolf Pack's Blaga Delic and a 6-4, 2-6 (10-7) win over the Huskies' Tami Grende. Both matches were on the No. 3 court.
Former WAC rival, San Jose State will play their first dual match of the season here in Honolulu. SJSU competed in five fall tournament but will open 2015 against Hawai'i. The Spartans are led by No. 90 Marie Klocker who is a two-time all-Mountain West Conference player. Klocker has recorded an 11-5 record this season (including the fall).
Arizona is also opening its 2016 season in Hawai'i. The Wildcats are one of 10 ranked Pac-12 teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) first poll of the spring. Junior Lauren Marker was tabbed at No. 64 in singles in the ITA as well after recording a 6-3 record this past fall. Marker, along with seniors Inge Hendrikx and Shayne Austin will help lead the Wildcats this season.
