Women's Tennis Battles Nevada, No. 56 Washington

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team will play a pair of dual matches against Nevada and No. 56 Washington this week. The Rainbow Wahine will battle the Wolf Pack on Thursday, Jan. 14 followed by a match against the Huskies on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Most recently, the Rainbow Wahine were just edged out by No. 11 Baylor, 4-3 this past Saturday. Rookie Marina Hruba has come out of the gates fast, posting a perfect 4-0 record through the first week of action. Junior Cindy Nguyen fell in her first two singles matches during the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Lahaina, Maui last week. But, Nguyen has since won two straight, including a three-set win over Baylor's No. 1 Kiah Generette in three sets.

Nevada opens their 2016 season against Hawai'i. They are led by newcomer Caudia Herrero who comes into the week ranked No. 113 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.  Herrero, a sophomore from Salamanca, Spain, went 10-1 in the fall season. In doubles, Nevada's Blaga Delic and Sheila Morales led the Wolf Pack with a 9-6 record in the fall.

Washington comes to Honolulu with a 3-0 record, notching wins over Eastern Washington, Seattle, and Portland last week. The Huskies swept the Eagles and Redhawks and gave up just one match against the Pilots in two days of action. In singles, No. 65 Stacey Fung leads the Huskies coming to Hawai'i.
