Match NotesFULLERTON, Calif.—The 10th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (12-1, 2-0 Big West) hits the road for the first time this year as they head to California to take on Cal State Fullerton (0-13, 0-1 BWC) and UC Riverside (6-8, 1-0 BWC) in a pair of conference showdowns. Hawai'i began the season with a 13-match home stand and is off to a 2-0 start in conference after sweeping both UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly this past week. The Rainbow Wahine, who moved up one spot to No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches Poll this week, are on a seven-match win streak with seven sweeps on the season—including their last three matches.
The Rainbow Wahine's middle hitters were one of the keys to UH's success this past week. The middles were fed a steady dose of sets thanks in part to solid passing from the back row, which in part was due to touching a lot of balls at the net and channel blocking to the passers.
Olivia Magill,
Emily Maglio and
Annie Mitchem--UH's middle hitters--hit a combined .516 hitting percentage in the two matches last week with 32 kills on 62 swings and no errors between the three of them. On defense, the "Three-M Roofing Company" also put up a wall with 18 combined blocks. Nationally, UH's block is ranked No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Big West with 3.17 roofs per set. Magill,
Nikki Taylor and Maglio are ranked No. 1, 2, and 3 in the league in blocking. Hawai'i also ranks No. 1 in the league in hitting percentage (.286), assists (13.17), kills (14.33), service aces (1.57), and opponent hitting percentage (.156). The lone category UH is not ranked first in the league is digs, where the 'Bows are ranked at No. 7 with 13.53 digs per set.
Magill not only currently leads the league and is No. 4 in the nation in blocks per set (1.58) but she also is tops in the league with a .395 hitting percentage with 118 kills on 253 attempts and just 18 errors. Junior opposite
Nikki Taylor is also ranked in the top 5 in four conference statistical categories and has been the "go-to" player for the Rainbow Wahine all season thus far. Emerging as a threat in the middle has been sophomore, Maglio who is second in the league in hitting percentage and third in blocks per set.
