Meet ResultsLA'IE, O'ahu—Running with a smaller squad, six members of the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine cross country team took on a new north shore course in Saturday's BYU-Hawai'i Invitational, with UH finishing third in the race on BYUH's campus in La'ie.
Â
"Good efforts by our women today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "We held out six of our top eight in preparation for our trip to Sacramento next week. Unfortunately, the course was not very fast today due to muddy portions of 400 meters or more of each mile on a three loop course."
Â
"We look forward to a strong showing in our next local race, hosted by Chaminade at Kapi?olani Park on October 10th," Boyce added.
Â
An all-local meet featuring Hawai'i, host BYUH, Chaminade, Hawai'i-Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific, freshman
Sabrina Sterbis paced the Rainbow Wahine, leading the UH pack in the 35-woman field with a ninth-place finish in a time of 21:01.0 in the 5k race.
ClassmatesÂ
Tristan Setzer (21:32.0) and
Alison Bowman (22:43.0) followed in 14th and19th, respectively, while senior Jade Vaughn (23:04.0) made her first 2015 appearance in 21st and
Paige Sullivan (23:15.0) rounded out the scoring group with a 23rd-place finish.
Â
Junior
Emily Stack also competed with a mark of 25:05.0
Â
In the team competition, HPU largely controlled the top five, logging four of the slots for a meet-winning score of 17. HPU sophomore Johanna Apelryd took home the individual title with a time of 19:50.0.
Host BYUH finished second with 44 points, while the Rainbow Wahine finished in third with a score of 80 and a total time of 1:51.35. UH-Hile and Chaminade finished in the final two ranks with scores of 105 and 132.
Â
Many of the highest-level runners for the Rainbow Wahine were out of action this weekend and return to the mainland next week to add a little Golden State preparation at Sacramento State's Capital Cross Challenge, Oct. 3 at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex. The Big West Championships will be held in California in Riverside on Oct. 31.
