No. 12 Hawai‘i Battles CSU Bakersfield; Alumnae Game on Sunday

Game Notes

HONOLULU—The 12th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (8-1, 0-0 Big West) wraps up its non-conference pre-season schedule with a pair or matches against CSU Bakersfield this week. The Rainbow Wahine and the Roadrunners will square off on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 pm and again on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 5:00 pm.

The 'Bows rose four spots to No. 12 in the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) this week after rallying to upset then-No. 2 Florida and sweeping their three matches in the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge. It is UH's highest ranking since 2013 when they ascended as high as No. 5 in Week #6 that year.

Against the Gators, junior opposite Nikki Taylor (Honolulu, O'ahu / Kaiser HS) drilled a career-high 27 kills and recorded her third double-double of the season with a season-high 17 digs. Taylor tallied a tournament-high 57 kills over three matches and for her stellar effort, she was named the AVCA National Player of the Week, the Big West Player of the Week and the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. Overall, the junior out of Kaiser High School in Honolulu leads the 'Bows with 162 kills (4.91 per set). She is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA with 6.12 points per set (kills + service aces + blocks) and No. 5 in kills per set. Taylor has led UH in kills in all nine matches thus far this season and has notched double-digits every night.

Sophomore libero Savanah Kahakai (Honolulu, O'ahu / Farrington HS) earned her first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week award to join Taylor for weekly conference honors. Kahakai led UH in digs in all three of Hawai'i victories this week. She registered double-digit digs against San Diego State, Florida and Eastern Washington totaling 42 over the three tournament matches.  She had 13 digs against the Aztecs and 10 versus the Eagles. But, her best effort came when it was needed most—Kahakai notched a career-high 19 digs in Hawaii's five-set thriller over the Gators. She also contributed in other ways, chipping in with eight assists and a service ace against Florida. Overall, Kahakai leads UH with 109 digs (3.41 per set).

Senior Olivia Magill leads the conference and is ranked No. 9 in the nation averaging 1.58 blocks per set and is No. 15 and atop the Big West with 52 total blocks. Magill has been a steady, high-flying force in the middle for UH this season. She is also second on the team with 82 kills. Magill was named to the all-tournament team this past week.
