HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's volleyball head coach
Charlie Wade announced the hiring of former Rainbow Warrior and AVCA All-American Joshua Walker as assistant coach. Walker returns to UH this season after playing four years professionally in Europe.
"Josh is a tireless worker, extremely loyal, and knows what it takes to improve and succeed at the highest levels," said Wade. "His keen intellect and nimble sense of humor make him pleasant to be around and a joy to work with. I can see Josh quickly becoming one of the best young coaches in the game and a great addition to the program for years to come."
During his career as a Rainbow Warrior from 2007-11, Walker served as one of the team's consistent leaders in kills at outside hitter. He finished his four-year career with 1,428 kills (3.91 K/S) and currently ranks fifth in program history. Walker was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second team in 2011 and made the All-MPSF third team as well as second team AVCA All-America in 2010.
"As a player, Josh demonstrated the importance of hard work, being a good teammate and always putting the program or the team first," said Wade. "Now as a coach, he can share the skills that made him an All-American and a top professional player with our current players."
After graduating from UH in 2011, Walker carried his volleyball career overseas to Greece, Denmark, Finland, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2014-2015 he was an All-Star in the Finland Volleyball League, and also earned MVP honors during his time spent in Denmark in 2014.
"I'm excited to be back," said Walker. "I continued to follow the team while I played professionally, and have rapport with the coaching staff and the returning players. My ultimate goal for the program is to help bring UH a national championship title. I'd be lying if I didn't say I feel we have the program and fan base capable of reaching that goal and staying relevant in the MPSF."
Walker received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Hawai'i in 2011. He now resides in O'ahu with his wife Tehane Walker and his daughter Shiloh.
