No. 17 Women's Volleyball Hosts Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic

HONOLULU—The No. 17 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 Big West) continues tournament play this weekend as it hosts the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, Sept. 4-6 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The 'Bows open the tourney against Iowa (2-1, 0-0 Big-10) on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 pm. On Saturday, Sept. 5, UH will battle American (3-1, 0-0 Patriot League). Hawai'i will close the tourney by taking on No. 25 UCLA (1-1, 0-0 Pac-12) on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 5:00 pm.
 
The Rainbow Wahine rose one spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches' poll after sweeping last week's opening Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. UH earned wins over Idaho, Wichita State and Oregon State to reclaim the tourney title for the ninth time in the 11-year history of the event. Junior opposite Nikki Taylor earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and the Big West's Player of the Week awards after posting 52 kills in 100 attempts with 19 errors for a .330 hitting percentage while averaging 5.2 kills per set. She also was in on a team-high 15 blocks and was third on the team with 27 digs. In UH's four-set win over Wichita State, Taylor pounded a career-high 25 kills to go with eight digs and four blocks to help lift the 'Bows to the victory.
 
Both senior middle hitter Olivia Magill and junior setter Tayler Higgins made the all-tournament team as well. Magill had a solid opening weekend, recording a team-high .415 hitting percentage with 34 kills in 65 swings with seven errors. Magill was also in on 13 blocks for the tournament.  Taylor set the table for the 'Bows, dishing out 115 assists and she led Hawai'i with 32 digs. She also had five blocks and a service ace.

Television: OCSports (Oceanic Time Warner Cable Channels 16 (SD) and 1016 (HD) –or- Hawaiian Telcom Channel 89 (SD) and 1089 (HD) will be broadcasting all Hawai'i matches of the tournament with Kanoa Leahey calling the play-by-play and Chris McLachlin providing color commentary.

Series History: Hawai' is 2-0 against Big-10 opponent, Iowa. UH won the last meeting. 3-0 on Sept. 3, 2000. It will be the first meeting between UH and American. The Eagles have won the Patriot League 12 times—including four of the last five titles. Hawai'i has a slim lead over UCLA, 37-35. Last season, the Bruins swept the 'Bows on Sept. 12 in the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge.
