"Wired" with Coach Gouveia HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors worked the final day of the spring session Saturday morning at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex practice field, hitting the field with the same intensity and emotion as the opening day of spring.
One unit that we haven't looked at as a whole could be one of the most crucial in the fall—the linebacker corps. Led by senior
Simon Poti and newly-minted captain
Lance Williams, the linebackers expect to show a nose for the ball in new defensive coordinator
Tom Mason's new system, developing under Mason and second-year outside linebackers coach
Kurt Gouveia.
A veteran of the NFL as a player with 10 years of coaching experience, Gouveia has a good base for that nose for the ball. He played 13 seasons in the NFL as a linebacker, registering 781 tackles and 12 interceptions through 183 career games.
As for the 'Bows, Poti is the top returning tackler for UH after ranking in a tie for second last season with 63 tackles, with three for loss, two sacks and an interception.
Julian Gener registered 46 tackles, five for loss with one sack, ranking sixth on the team last season. Starting just half the year in 2014, Williams collected 25 stops last fall.
With spring ball closing out, it seemed fitting to put fans in the middle of the action, getting up close and personal with Gouveia in an episode of H-TV's WIRED. Follow the link above to go through a practice with Coach Gouveia.
UH returns to camp in the fall, gearing up for the 2015 opener versus Colorado on Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium, Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. HT, broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.
