Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor topped Long Beach State in the round of 16 but fell in the quarterfinals to Grand Canyon, closing a terrific season at the AVCA Pairs Championship on Sunday.
Despite the loss, both were named to the AVCA All-American Team and were honored with a short ceremony following the completion of the quarterfinal matches. It was Taylor's second All-American selected and Tiegs's third having also won as a sophomore at Florida State.
The UH tandem opened the day beating the 49er pair of Tyler Jackson and Anete Brinke 21-16, 15-21, 17-15 in a thrilling three-set match. They dominated the opening frame but had to grind out the three set victory to move on to the quarterfinals. Both partners shared the offensive load as Taylor put down 18 kills and Tiegs added 17 more while hitting an impressive .538. Tiegs also added 12 digs.
Tiegs and Taylor would unfortunately meet their end against a solid GCU pair in Shannon Dugan and Mackenzie Phelps, falling 21-12, 21-18. They staved off two match points in what proved to be the final set but ultimately succumbed to the sweep. It was the rubber match for Tiegs this season against the Antelope No. 1 team having won at the USAV Collegiate Challenge and falling in an April match at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. Taylor had 15 kills and Tiegs added 10 digs in the loss.
The loss finished the season for the 'Bows, who were all in attendance to root on Taylor and Tiegs who played her final match as a Rainbow Wahine. Taylor will return next season for her junior year.
